EIYEN — Sea Of Love

Sea Of Love is a melodic progressive rock concept album by German musician and songwriter Harald Plontke, released under the artist name EIYEN. Five years in the making, the album grew out of a period of personal loss and follows an emotional journey from disappointment, depression and desperation towards renewed hope and the return of joy.

The song cycle starts with Bubbles, a reflection on unbalanced relationships and the need to let go of people who consume affection and attention without giving anything in return. Throughout the album, loss, memory and the persistence of love are explored from different perspectives. Sea Of Love describes the experience of a lost relationship as a shipwreck and the subsequent odyssey at sea, while Abandoned Furnace connects the melancholy of an abandoned blast furnace with the feeling of emptiness and with a love that continues to burn inside. The North Sea looks back at a love that has ended, but whose memories remain as a source of light rather than something to be forgotten.

Towards the end of the album, the perspective changes. I'm A Child is about preserving the ability to love, dream and experience joy despite the disappointments of adult life. The closing track Time was written during the last year, when hope and enjoyment of life had fully returned. It uses the changing seasons as a metaphor for life itself. Periods of darkness give way to awakening, abundance and reflection. Its recurring thought, that time passes, separates, unites and heals, brings the emotional journey of Sea Of Love to its conclusion.

Plontke's musical roots reach back to the 1980s, when as a teenager he was the keyboard player and main songwriter of the Frankfurt-area pop band OBC, which won the 1822 Bandwettbewerb, a band competition sponsored by Frankfurt-based 1822 Sparkasse. In this time he also gained his first experience with home recording, from four-track demo production to early computer-based music production on the Atari ST using Cubase and Notator.

After a long break devoted largely to family life from the late 1990s, Plontke returned to music more intensively around 2017, developing his production skills and writing new songs. The tracks that finally became Sea Of Love were created during the years that followed, shaped by personal setbacks and a painful separation.

At the centre of the album is a simple idea. Relationships can end and people can hurt each other, but the ability for love does not necessarily disappear with them. It can survive disappointment, become part of memory and eventually turn into a source of strength, hope and new experiences. The name Eiyen also represents this. It is Japanese and means eternity, like the love that always remains within us and is never lost.

Sea Of Love was written and produced as an independent project, with guest musicians contributing to selected tracks. Its visual identity is built around an original painting by Dorit Kixmüller, created especially for the album. No AI was used in the production of the album.
